Project Time
Okay, so we've been set a project In uni to come up with an animatic for a 20 second animation. I instantly got an idea of a shark hassling an old lady for money she doesn't have over the phone... got sketching while being told the project... should have maybe listened to the brief a bit better on retrospect.
now lets see the early sketches....
now lets see the early sketches....
Initial Sketches were just to get a general idea of the feel of the animation. I wanted the old lady to seem vulnerable and the shark to seem obnoxious. to the point of cruel and not relatable. He's a shark, he isn't going to be too aware of human feelings, he's just doing his job. Just spewing out words at her. Having the sharks eyes not on show and having the old lady hunched and puffy did this well. I did think it was only fair that I think of other stuff, design wise.. hence the next images...
These designs a little more realistic (well the shark in the tie anyway) I had an idea to make him a hammer head shark but thought it would include eyes... this would have given the shark human emotion that i thought would take from the impact of a shark by a desk... the realistic ideas have been pretty much chucked now.
After much designing, I ended up pretty much back to the start, design wise, This is the idea for the ending, after the phone call. Timing will play a big part it making this look awesome!
This is my polished shark. While i doubt he'll move from the first position having his side profile gives me a better idea about what he's like. Still having design problems with the flipping grandma. I'll update you guys when i've scribbled the gran of my dreams.
Thats one fine gran!
After talking to my fellow animators and our lecturer i took the gran back to square one. i looked at google images and random elderly people on buses for inspiration. this helped me not rely on whats already in cartoons for elderly inspiration. I kept her vulnerable but took her far away from any oldy I've seen in doodles before!
An even finer gran
Spruced her up a tad! kept with the muted baby colours, seen in a certain shark. A few things could be altered like the position of her necklace in the second doodle, but you get the gist of her full appearance i guess. Altered her chin a bit, looks a bit nicer on the eye.
Now i've polished off that gran, set design time.
Once again google images helped out (see research page) but I had the layout pretty much sussed in my brain. it was just a matter of colours (see research page). i made the outlines not black so the characters would stand out more...whaddya think?
STORYBOARD!!!!!!!!!
jJust a rough outline story board. I Think ill do the animatic digitally. still pretty rough but this way i can see it better, the rough one was good for getting the idea and pacing of the shots somewhat in my brain. But i want to do something impressive. The shot of the teeth i think is what is going to make this animation work. its going to hopefully make it a tad sinister and heighten the overall character of the shark. The pencil scripting is only rough and i'll work on the final script right now!
Script
Ring ring ring ring. Gran picks up
Gran- h-hello-interupted
Shark- on the phone good evening, this is Steven from LoanMoney. Im phoning to enquire about your late payment of the money we borrowed you. We understand payments can sometimes be tricky however, given your circumstances we have to make sure the money will be returned to us. Its not like your getting any younger – loud HAHAHAHAHA- huuuhhh… seeya
Gran- says this while shark is mentioning money I don’t have that sort of money!
He hangs up and looks smug only to then take an aggressive bite out of the desk hes sat at

-It was originally a hell of a lot longer but had to cut it down for timing and what words were easier for my voice to say! The 'huhhhh seeya' line was actually ad-libbed as a joke then i decided to bring it in for good as it made the character seem more obnoxious.
WE GOT A MAKING OF DOCUMENTARY!!!!
My Work Colleague and media practice student Jimmy Spray, who also happens to voice the shark , bought his camera to Dialogue Recording. It all went well apart from the voice of the gran.
well, the video explains it all... kind of!.
Check out his website right here please. www.mymatejames.co.uk

And now... the feature presentation. Of a rough storyboard.
After hours of hand destroying scribbling, a million Adobe Premier crashes and eight cups of tea its finally here. Doodled on Photoshop and shoved in Adobe editing software with dialogue and sound effects all recorded by me (except the phone) give your eyes a banquet they deserve! I ended up voicing the gran by the way, believe me its better than the stuff we got from my friend Shakira!
One Sheet Does Plenty
Guess this finalises my designs. what i want everything to look like.
Good Clean Animated Fun
thats right... i had some time so animated the chomp on flash.
